myGov and the ATO

The government has previously introduced the myGov portal as a secure way to access government services online with one login and one password.  It can link to many federal and state government departments, the ATO being one of them.

Once the ATO is linked to your myGov account (and depending on the setting chosen), certain correspondences will no longer be posted to you or to your tax agent, it will be sent to your online myGov account and can be accessed when you login.  The ATO will usually advise you that you have new communications either via an email or a sms.

To ensure that correspondences are not missed, we suggest that you login into your myGov and check that your email address, mobile number and personal details are up to date.

myGov is also useful when you are contacted by a suspected scammer who may say that you have an outstanding tax debt.  Simply login into your myGov portal to check your income tax and integrated client accounts to see the balances and also to see if you have received any debt related correspondences from the ATO.

If you are contacted by a suspected scammer we recommend you politely end the call and contact the ATO directly via the methods on their Contact Us page https://www.ato.gov.au/about-ato/contact-us/
